FAQS

The world's fastest growing remedy for hair loss, scalp micropigmentation is a cover-up for baldness in men, thinning hair in women, and a camouflage for scars and alopecia. When performed correctly by a skilled and experienced artist, scalp micropigmentation is virtually undetectable.

Scalp micropigmentation is the application of thousands of micro-dots to the scalp. Each micro-dot is a deposit of specialized pigment, designed to replicate the appearance of a shaven hair follicle.

For men who are happy to shave their hair - SMP creates the illusion of a full head of shaven hair.
For men and women who prefer to keep their hair longer - SMP reduces the color contrast between the hair and scalp to make hair loss much less noticeable.
For people with scars - SMP blends the scar with the surrounding hair to drastically reduce its visibility, often by as much as 90%.
For those with alopecia - SMP is adapted to meet your specific and changing needs. Ultimately the outcome is to hide your hair loss to the greatest extent possible. In most cases, alopecia can be completely hidden.

The short answer is that you are almost certainly a suitable candidate for SMP, however there are a few circumstances that would stop you being a good candidate, known in the industry as "contraindications". The circumstances upon which SMP would not be a suitable solution are as follows:

You have had hair transplant surgery in the last 12 months, and SMP would be required in either the donor or recipient areas of your scalp.
You have skin damage caused by hair system adhesives, or a hair system has caused your skin to be in a poor condition or a different color to the surrounding skin.
You are undergoing chemotherapy, or any medical treatment that prevents you from having tattoos.
You have used retinol products within the last 3 months.
You have had laser tattoo removal within the last 3 months.
You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
You are taking medication that thins the blood.
You are likely to experience an allergic reaction to the SMP pigments. If you suspect this may be the case, we can perform a patch test.
You have a specific skin condition such as Seborrheic Dermatitis or Lichen Planus. These conditions do not necessarily rule out SMP, but you should only choose an experienced artist and consult a dermatologist prior to treatment. SMP can usually proceed during periods when your skin condition is less aggressive.
You have sunburn on your scalp.
You have received a poor quality procedure in the past that requires full removal.

The average scalp micropigmentation procedure requires 3 treatment sessions, each taking 2-3 hours to complete.

Clients with scars, alopecia, fair skin or more complex requirements may require more or longer sessions.

Scalp micropigmentation is  a permanent procedure. Once completed, the pigments will not go away unless removed by laser, saline or a similar method.

That said, the pigments do fade slowly over time and require top-ups every 3-6 years on average.

It is important to avoid over-doing your procedure or having too many top-ups. The scalp can only hold so much pigment, and an over-saturated scalp looks blocky and unnatural, leading to an unwelcome helmet-like appearance.

Seasoned SMP artists know this, and we aim to achieve your desired result with as little pigment as possible.

Less pigment also makes top-ups easier, however it is still important to leave it as long as possible until a top-up is genuinely required.
